My First Date with Ms. Fairfax
One of the joys of living in New York state, is that you can travel to entirely different vistas within an hour, or so. I live near the beach so heading to the mountains of the Hudson Valley is a delight. A change of scenery will do you good, especially when you’re visiting dear family.
One of our stops that day was in Newburgh. Our hosts, Ed and Michele, brought us to a place called Ms. Fairfax. The vibe was mellow, friendly, and you felt the warmth of the place the moment you entered. It’s not a big joint but that’s part of the charm, to be honest. They had me at the velvet drapery entry. Brick walls, warm candlelight and a small, active bar, locked me in for a great evening.
Ms. Fairfax…forgive me for saying so, but I think I have a crush on you.
The food was richly spiced with some unexpected flavors. I loved it! We started with Almonds & Olives, over drinks. The nuts were spiced and roasted with just enough bang without burn. The mixed olives were perfect because hey, olives!
Next, we tried the Shallot Fried Cheese, at the recommendation of my hosts. Try it once and you can see how that could become an addiction. So light and flavorful but crisp with absolutely no grease! They are tidbit sized so having a few won’t blow your good intentions.
There were many different entrees on the table, and tastes were shared. There was Ms. Fairfax’s signature Steak Frites, and my husband’s favorite dish, A Big Bowl of Pasta. It was as if they saw him coming because all his favorites were there. Sweet Italian Sausage, Red Pepper, Onion, Garlic, White Wine, Spinach, Parmesan – what’s not to love?
Me? I can’t resist any eggplant dish, and theirs did not disappoint. There was nothing subtle about the Chermoula Eggplant. When I saw this on the menu, I swooned.
